Spend Sunday exploring beautiful Boulder, renowned for its magnificent mountain backdrop, hundreds of miles of hiking trails, and some of the nation’s most innovative approaches to sustainable recreation access. Travel to Boulder by bus and meet up with your tour guides Darcy Kitching, author of The Best Urban Hikes: Boulder, and Elaine Erb, sustainable transportation planner with Boulder Chamber Transportation Connections. After taking the Flatiron Flyer to Boulder, we’ll catch the free Park-to-Park Shuttle to Chautauqua Park, learning about Boulder County’s recreation access shuttle system during the ride. At Chautauqua, we’ll discuss the city of Boulder’s recent parking reform to help reduce single-occupant vehicle trips to the park, followed by a short ranger talk and an invigorating 3.5-mile hike. After our hike, we’ll enjoy lunch together at the Chautauqua Dining Hall before riding back downtown on the Park-to-Park shuttle and heading back to Denver.

Known for their beautiful setting, livability and forward-thinking approaches to transportation, both the City of Boulder and University of Colorado Boulder are ideal places to explore innovative and tried-and-true transportation programs and infrastructure. Guided by staff from the City and CU, the tour will kick off on CU’s campus and will highlight CU’s transportation programs and infrastructure. We’ll then venture off campus to explore some of the latest examples of forward thinking street design and see how the City is carrying out the Vision Zero plan in real time.  We’ll finish in downtown Boulder where attendees can continue exploring on their own, have a happy hour beverage with us or catch the bus back to Denver.


Note: we will be taking a bus to Boulder, then using shared micromobility (BCycle e-bikes or Lime e-scooters) and on foot, so dress comfortably. More details will be sent ahead of the tour.

Curious how the light rail train cars that carry 100’s of commuters each day stay in peak performance?  Tour the RTD Elati Maintenance Facility and learn the in-and-outs on how RTD maintains this sizeable and crucial fleet of light rail train cars.  (NOTE:  attendees must wear close toe, comfortable walking shoes, no sandals, flip-flops, dress shoes or heals allowed, as this is a working maintenance shop)

The 5280 Trail is a vision for a new, distinctly Denver amenity that will connect vibrant and diverse city neighborhoods through the great urban outdoors while creating a powerful sense of place. This planned 5.280-mile loop through the heart of Denver will bring together a signature walking, bicycling, and rolling circuit that connects community landmarks and public spaces throughout the city's core. On this tour, we’ll learn about upcoming plans for the 5280 Trail, as well as work already completed, including public art and placemaking projects, wayfinding, and quick-build connections.

Tuesday, August 6 at 4 p.m. 

Built in 1888 at the cost of $2 million, The Brown Palace opened its doors in 1892 to worthy travelers seeking a new life in the up-and-coming city of Denver, Colorado. Come & experience the hotel through a walking tour to learn about its history from the 1800s to today, including some of the guests that may have never left.

Wednesday, August 7

Tour a Platinum Bike-Friendly University and Community! This tour will highlight CSU and the City of Fort Collins’ collaborative approach to integrated bicycle, pedestrian and transit planning, along with programs and policies to encourage the safe use of sustainable transportation modes. The tour will begin with lunch and end with happy hour at New Belgium Brewing. In between, participants will tour the CSU campus with a Spin e-bike/e-scooter, or walking group. Speakers will share the history of successful partnerships and plans for future collaborations. Stops will include CSU’s commuter facilities, the CSU transit center and future project sites.

Workshops 

Sunday, August 4

Drawing on decades of rigorous research, the Behavioral Insights (BI) approach applies evidence about the drivers of human behavior to address real-world problems. Participants in this workshop will receive a hands-on introduction to BI, with the goal of developing the knowledge and skills to apply this approach to their unique TDM challenges.

Participants will first develop an understanding of the core concepts of the BI approach, leveraging real-world examples. Facilitators will then guide participants through a series of activities for using BI in practice. All participants will have the opportunity to apply BI to a TDM challenge they are currently facing.

This workshop will be led by facilitators from the Behavioral Insights Team (BIT). As leaders in the field of BI, BIT has trained more than 40,000 civil servants and practitioners in BI. BIT facilitators will draw on this experience to equip participants with new tools to address their challenges.

  • Describe the Behavioral Insights approach and foundational findings from the behavioral sciences
  • Identify factors that influence people's behavior and design solutions to promote behavior change
  • Begin applying BI to address their unique TDM challenges

Meet the workshop lead 

Sheena Mirpuri is a Principal Advisor overseeing the sustainability and transportation portfolio at BIT Americas. She has 13 years of experience conducting mixed methods research. During her time at BIT, Sheena has led projects in the sustainability and health portfolios across public and private sectors, with a focus on equity and social impact. One highlight includes working with the Chicago Department of Water Management to double the rate of completion for home lead testing kits.

Prior to joining BIT, Sheena worked in the Immigrant Health and Cancer Disparities Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she designed behaviorally informed interventions to improve the health and well-being of taxi and for-hire vehicle drivers in New York City. Sheena earned her PhD in Applied Developmental Psychology from Fordham University and her BA in Psychology from Emory University. She has held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Hong Kong and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

This free workshop offers all ACT members currently in chapter and council leader positions hands-on training to take their leadership to the next level. After the three-hour workshop, attendees will come away with a better understanding of how they can plan for better chapter and council success. Attendees will learn details about ACT including the strategic plan; membership structure and recruitment; operational strategies; and review case studies related to chapter and council leader roles. Attendees will receive a $100 refund upon completion of the workshop.

This workshop is highly encouraged for those in current leadership positions, but those interested in future chapter and council leader positions are welcome to attend.

Explore the evolution of TDM through an entertaining “History of TDM” presentation, followed by the opportunity to showcase your expertise in a post-presentation quiz. Participate in a lively discussion to identify contemporary challenges for TDM initiatives and a group activity to adapt lessons learned for diverse future scenarios. Meet the workshop lead 

Thom Cerny specializes in travel behavior change, with an emphasis on carbon reduction initiatives and reducing transportation-related climate impacts. Thom’s 35-year career has focused on establishing and expanding effective TDM programs, contributing to numerous high-profile initiatives across the US. Thom’s work now focuses on exploring the impacts of transportation options on a community’s well-being and regional resiliency. Thom also serves on the Executive Committee of the Association for Commuter Transportation. In his free time, Thom enjoys road and mountain bike riding, and volunteers at the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association, building and maintaining shared use trails in the Atlanta metro area.
