Planning Director

Job Description
The GObike planning director (PD) works directly with organization leadership, including the executive director, deputy director, operations director, and workshop director to support the organization’s place-centered programs, advocacy, and planning initiatives. The planning director manages complete streets, trails, and healthy streets implementation planning projects. The PD is expected to work closely with the executive director in response to crises or changes.
This position reports to the executive director.
Key responsibilities:
- Lead interdisciplinary project teams to complete development of technical reports and presentations in support of complete streets and trails projects in WNY
- Manage planning projects, including tracking budgets, deliverables and schedules
- Manage Planning Manager, GO Buffalo Niagara Manager, Community Engagement Manager
- Manage relationships and deliverables with consultants contracted to complete tasks related to planning department projects
- Manage seasonal, part time employees, such as the HSI Implementation Team, and planning department interns
- Maintain strong relationships with municipal, agency, and nonprofit partners, along with grassroots leadership, community activists
- Prepare memos and technical reports, analyze transportation data and communicate results
- Prepare maps and complete GIS spatial analysis to support advocacy and planning reports
- Conduct fieldwork and site visits for planning projects
- Support business development and proposal writing
- Support direct community organizing activities, including, but not limited to canvassing, presenting to groups online and in-person, tabling, calling, and emailing, within neighborhoods of focus and proximity to projects
- Support community organizing and outreach activities by managing and scheduling stakeholder meetings, hosting workshops, and promoting events
- Prepare and/or review monthly progress reports and invoices; and maintain record of contracts and invoicing for planning projects, including collecting, organizing and reporting staff time, effort and deliverables across all programs.
- Assist other GObike departments with event support
- Assist with Healthy Streets Initiative implementation, including permit development, bike rack installation, street marking, and striping
The GObike planning director should have:
- Master's degree in urban planning, public or nonprofit administration, or related field
- 3+ years management experience
- Experience with Complete Streets principals
- Experience with GIS and geospatial analysis
- A team-player attitude, creative problem-solving skills, and strong communication skills
- A demonstrated ability to work across racial, ethnic, gender, orientation, class and ability differences
- Personal commitment to active transportation (biking, walking, and transit) and interest in promoting these activities to others
- Commitment to work collaboratively with staff, partner organizations, and public offices
- Comfort working with executive leadership
- Comfort using word processing, spreadsheets and web-based file systems (i.e. Google Suite)
Preferred, but not Required, Experience
- Transportation engineering background
- Experience implementing transportation planning projects such as trail feasibility studies, active mobility plans, or site-specific infrastructure plans
- Familiarity with Remix software
- MioVision Scout Plus hardware installation and analysis experience
- Familiarity with StreetLight Data
- General familiarity with MUTCD, AASHTO, and NACTO design guidelines
- Familiarity with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Acrobat
Position starts immediately. Compensation is $65,000 - $72,000 annually, plus benefits, including fully employer-funded health insurance, generous paid time off, hybrid work schedule, flex time, and employee discounts at the GObike workshop. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
