Understanding and Influencing Traveler Behavior to Make the Most of our Transportation System

The ACT Midwest Chapter is hosting the first Midwest TDM Summit convening public and private sector planners, engineers, and communications professionals alongside employers and developers to understand how TDM strategies can improve livability of communities in the Midwest while stimulating economic activity and encouraging efficient use of our existing and future transportation infrastructure.

Many public transportation agencies, local governments, businesses, and developers are already doing TDM – whether it’s communicating to the public and local businesses about construction impacts and travel options besides driving, promoting bike and transit commutes to employees, offering hybrid work schedules or telecommuting, building bike storage rooms to attract tenants, requiring developments to consider transportation access, or encouraging residents to try carpooling or transit.

All of these TDM strategies + more help people understand their transportation options and help them reach their destinations easily, affordably and sustainably. Join us to learn more about TDM with sessions focusing on how TDM can benefit your community and be a cost-effective way to meet safety, livability, and economic goals, including panels focusing on how different levels of government can work together, how employers can improve options for commuters, and how developers realize returns on their investments.

Join us for a transit/walking tour to see transit and bike infrastructure in downtown Minneapolis. Light rail, bus, bus rapid transit, and protected bike lanes converge in downtown Minneapolis–Minnesota’s largest city. Transit and mobility hubs are designed to efficiently and rapidly move many of the 216,000 people who work downtown, along with the 55,000 people who live there. This tour will highlight how the infrastructure is integrated.

The transit/walking tour distance includes a 2-mile ride on the METRO Green Line (light rail) from the U of M to downtown, and a 1.5-mile walking tour downtown. Stops include:

  • U. S. Bank Stadium LRT Station
  • Well Fargo Campus bike room facilities
  • South 4th Street raised two-way bike lane
  • Marq2 Transit Corridor on Marquette Ave S
  • Nicollet Mall pedestrian and bus-only street
  • (Photo op!)  Bob Dylan mural
  • Hennepin Ave raised, one-way bike lane and upcoming METRO E Line BRT route
  • South 7th Street bus-only lane for METRO C & D Line BRT routes
  • (Photo op!) Iconic Mary Tyler-Moore statue

  • Exit Skyway network at the Hennepin County Government Center
  • Government Center Plaza Station to take the METRO Green Line LRT back to the U of M

Bike & Scooter Tour - UMN Campus Area

Join us for a six-mile slow roll through the University of Minnesota’s Platinum Level Bike Friendly Business and University campus. With a strong connection to the larger regional bike network, the campus itself has 12+ miles of bikeways, from shared lanes to off-street and separated paths.

We’ll visit bike infrastructure in and around campus and learn about various TDM programs along the way–all working together to make commuting truly multi-modal.

The biking tour distance will be about six miles with twelve stops, for two hours of fun on wheels. Bikes and scooters will be provided. Helmets and adaptive cycling available upon request.

Walking Tour - UMN East Bank Campus

Join us for a walking tour to learn about innovative transportation features of the beautiful University of Minnesota East Bank campus. The University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus is one of the most pedestrian, transit, and bike-friendly areas in the metro region, boasting over 46 miles of campus sidewalks and plazas, eight pedestrian bridges and skyways, 12+ miles of campus bike lanes and paths, 9,500+ bike racks and hoops, 6 campus bus routes, and 3 light rail stations.

The walking tour distance will be about two miles with stops including:

  • University of Minnesota Bike Center
