Executive Director's Report April 2026

General News,

Rising gas prices often bring travel habits back into the national conversation. A recent Today Show segment highlighting carpooling “making a comeback” reflects how quickly attention shifts when costs rise, reminding us that people do reconsider how they get around when conditions change. While these moments can influence short‑term behavior, they also point to a longer‑term lesson: dependable, efficient transportation options matter regardless of fuel prices.

TDM programs are effective not because prices go up or down, but because they provide consistent choices that reduce uncertainty, improve reliability, and support everyday travel needs. History shows interest in transportation options grows when gas prices rise and fades when they fall, underscoring the need for strong, ongoing education and investment.

Gas prices will always fluctuate, whether caused by policy decisions, nature, or conflict. The need for predictable, sustainable, and resilient transportation will not. As members and TDM professionals, this is an opportunity to lean into our role as educators and trusted resources, using moments like this to reinforce the everyday value of TDM, share success stories like those gathered in our 2025 Global TDM Impact Report, and ensure programs remain visible and supported no matter the external conditions. By doing so, we help build a transportation system that is prepared not just for today’s headlines, but for the long term.

That same long‑term approach is why ACT’s advocacy for the Maximizing Transportation Efficiency Act is so important. The legislation reflects what our industry knows to be true: effective transportation solutions depend on sustained investment in strategies that help people travel more efficiently every day, not just during periods of economic pressure. You play a critical role in advancing this message. By taking 30 seconds to lend your voice through ACT’s policy platform, you help ensure that decision‑makers understand the lasting value of TDM and the need to support it for the long term.

These same challenges and opportunities are at the heart of why gathering as an industry matters. ACT’s 40th Annual International Conference offers a critical forum to move beyond reacting to headlines and toward strengthening the long‑term strategies that sustain TDM through every economic cycle. It’s where practitioners, policymakers, and partners come together to share lessons learned, explore what’s working, and align on how to keep sustainable transportation relevant and supported no matter the conditions. At a moment when public interest is once again turning toward efficiency and choice, ACT’s International Conference provides an opportunity to deepen that momentum and collectively shape what comes next.

These conversations also underscore the importance of strong, engaged leadership within ACT. Serving on ACT’s Board of Directors is a meaningful way for individuals to help guide the future of our industry, ensuring that TDM remains visible, effective, and supported through changing economic and political landscapes. With nominations opening in June for six At‑Large seats and all Officer roles, there is a timely opportunity for members to step forward and contribute their perspective, experience, and voice. If you are interested in learning more about what board service involves or want to explore whether this opportunity may be a good fit, I encourage you to reach out to me directly, I’m happy to share more and start the conversation.

Thank you for the work you do every day and for being an engaged part of this community.

David
