Where In the World: Victoria Harbour Promenade
In a long layover in Hong Kong, I had the privilege to take a stroll on the new promenade along Victoria Harbour in January that was newly constructed and completed as of December 2025. The promenade extends 2.2 kilometers, which is equivalent to 1.36 miles. The promenade has public seating, workstations, art installations/photo opportunities and a public play area as well as a multi-use path for bicyclists, pedestrians and dog walkers (paw prints as an indicator). The multi-use path connects to ten access points to parks, Mass Transit Rail (MTR) stations, and other connecting points of interest.

I took some photos of the signage and use of materials/space for the promenade. Some observations I noted are the use of materials differentiated the intended use of space together with the cute sidewalk decals. There was also a good use of public spaces carved out that appeared to be inviting and thoughtfully designed for lounging, working, or sightseeing. While I was there, it appeared many people were training for an upcoming marathon, senior citizens practicing tai chi and young families walking with their children towards the play area.
The promenade was long and windy, designed as an open concept with separated areas through design elements such as planters, elevation, and art. I saw Christmas displays still up from December but there also appeared to be preparations for Chinese New Year installations and a stage. Coming from an urban planner background, I enjoyed seeing the promenade being so well utilized for being relatively new. It was so refreshing to see public spaces being utilized for its intended purpose where it felt like I was in a utopian city.

Promenades are an urban design element to create safe throughways and gathering spots for pedestrians and cyclists to enjoy through people-centric spaces. Mixed-use development tends to be also integrated where shopping, sightseeing and play areas add to rejuvenating dead space into social lively spaces by creating "connected ecosystems" of lifestyle, business, and entertainment. Victoria Harbour is a great example of what a built environment conducive for socializing, recreation and relaxation could look like for visitors and residents alike.
